This award was founded in 1990 and has since been made thirteen times. The following are the requirements for the award which is adjudicated in April/May each year. The panel is a subcommittee of Council, chosen by that body. It usually consists of the Chairmen of the Special Interest Groups, a vice-President and the President. The criteria for the award are given below as is other information on the award, and the names of previous winners.
Nominations are being sought from members of the Society for the 2006 award of the Mineralogical Society-Schlumberger Medal. This award has been created through the generous sponsorship of Schlumberger Cambridge Research and has the purpose:
`To recognize scientific excellence in mineralogy and its applications; mineralogy being broadly defined and reflecting the diverse and worldwide interests and membership of the Society with its various specialist groups. Evidence of such excellence should be in the form of published work by a currently active scientist. Nominations on behalf of both younger scientists and well established workers would be welcomed.'
Nominations should include a statement on the merits of the candidate, a summary curriculum vitae and a list of the nominee's more important contributions, together with the name of a seconder, who should also be a member of the Society. Nominations remain in force for three years from the time of nomination and nominees need not be members of the Society. Nominations should be sent to the President, at the Society's offices, to arrive no later than 21 April 2006. They will be considered in confidence by a Committee consisting of the President, a Vice-President, the Chairmen (or their nominees) of the Society's specialist Groups and a representative from Schlumberger. Previous recipients of the award, Society Officers, members of Council and members of the Committee (at the time of nomination and adjudication) will not be eligible for the award.
