:: Alcoa to build $1.5B Smelter in Trinidad

Global aluminum producer Alcoa has struck an agreement in principle with the government of Trinidad and Tobago to build a 341,000-metric-ton-per-year smelter in Cap-de-Ville, a newly established industrial estate in southwestern Trinidad.

Alcoa said the smelter and related facilities would cost $1.5 billion, with first metal production expected in late 2008.

The final go-ahead for construction is pending completion of an environmental impact report and the approval of Alcoa's board and relevant government bodies.

Alcoa will fully own the smelter, while the government will partner with the company on infrastructure for the facility.

The company and the government signed a memorandum of understanding in May 2004 for Alcoa to help develop an aluminum industry in the island nation. The completed smelter is expected to create a total of 750 to 800 jobs.
