:: Neutralisation of Red Mud Red mud is the highly caustic by-product created during aluminium manufacture. Until now it has been an environmental liability, but a process pioneered by Virotec uses sea water to remove much of the alkalinity, rendering the remaining material suitable for acid neutralising applications of for trapping the metals in mine waste water. The process is described in an article in the June 2003 issue of Materials World (pps. 22-24).
