:: Outokumpu Technology to Deliver a Roasting Plant to Zambia
Outokumpu Technology has been awarded a contract by Mopani Copper Mines Plc for a new copper and cobalt roasting plant to be built in Kitwe, Zambia. Mopani is owned by Glencore International AG, First Quantum Minerals Plc and Investment Holdings Plc.
Outokumpu Technology’s scope of supply includes the design, supply and construction of the new plant. The construction of this plant is scheduled to be finished and ready for commissioning in 2006.
The capacity of the roaster is about 500 tonnes of concentrate per day. By using fluidized bed technology the concentrate is transformed into copper-cobalt sulfate, which is further treated in a leaching plant to extract the copper and cobalt.
The first plant using this roasting technology was delivered to Zambia already in 1975 by former Lurgi Metallurgie GmbH, at present part of Outokumpu Technology, and it has been operating since 1980. This plant will now be replaced by the new roaster.
