:: Meridian Faces Open Pit Mining Ban

Argentinean daily El Oeste has reported that Chubut authorities have banned the use of cyanide and open pit mining in the province. The news is a further blow to Meridian Gold [MDG] which has halted development of its gold project at Esquel in the face of mounting local opposition. The project has now been paused indefinitely with construction never having started as expected in the first quarter and commercial production expected to be delayed at least a year, if not longer.

The new banning follows an earlier attempt to outlaw the use of cyanide which was rapidly overturned by a higher court. However, environmental activists opposed to the mine vowed to reintroduce the ban as soon as possible.
