:: Philippines Team Introduce New Gold Processing Technology

A team of experts from the University of the Philippines Diliman created a safer way to process gold. Herman Mendoza, from the UP Department of Mining, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, has partnered with the Department of Science and Technology to bring a study to life aimed to make gold processing safer without the use of cyanide and mercury. Dubbed as the "Integrated Gold and Copper Mineral Processing Plant," it uses gravity, floatation and the concentration method aimed to benefit small-scale miners all over the country. Mendoza said the technology took almost four years to complete with his team of experts and a partnership with the DOST.

In a talk at the UP Baguio campus Friday morning, Mendoza met with the small scale miners association, the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples as well as representatives from the Benguet Provincial board to present the invention and hopefully enjoin all stakeholders to avail of it. Mendoza?s technology is capable of extracting more than double the amount of gold which amalgamation and cyanidation can produce. The technology is also capable of extracting copper from the same ores simultaneously, doubling production.

The technology is now for sale at the DOST costing over P7 million but promises to make life easier and safer for those into the industry. Mendoza along with his team is doing the rounds all over the country to introduce the technology to the mining industry especially to the small scale miners, particularly in Benguet, saying the small scale miners association in the province has been very helpful in the completion of the project.
