:: Technology from Outokumpu Wins Again at Telfer

Outokumpu Technology Pty Ltd has been awarded another major minerals processing order at Newcrest Mining’s Telfer gold and copper project in Western Australia.

The latest technology package includes eight 30m3 flotation cells, six 18m counter-current decantation (CCD) circuit high rate thickeners and an 18m high rate concentrate thickener.

Outokumpu Technology’s Australian Regional Manager for Thickener Technology, Mr Brad Garraway, says this latest order will be used on the pyrite phase of Telfer, which is the second stage of the project. The first phase is well into commissioning.

The new order follows the installation earlier this year at Telfer of a 62m diameter high rate thickener and features Outokumpu’s Australian-engineered high-torque, low-maintenance SCD 2000 (SUPAFLO® Column Drive). The combined value of technology from Outokumpu in both phases of the Telfer project now exceeds $20 million.

"This is a great endorsement of our technology’s performance. The strength and scale of our solutions is reflected in the fact that we have already successfully provided Telfer with two thickeners - including the 62m tailings unit - and 50 flotation cells, of which 26 are 150m3 units. Because we can apply the best technology available internationally, with the expertise of a strong Outokumpu group based locally, we can offer an ideal combination for projects such as this," said Mr Garraway.

The flotation circuit also includes Outokumpu’s patented SkimAir® Flash Flotation technology for the early recovery of copper and gold minerals from the grinding circuit. The liberated fast-floating particles are recovered from the cyclone underflow and thus prevented from being over ground. The SkimAir® results in more stable feed to the conventional flotation circuit, improves plant dewatering and can improve grinding mill throughput.

Telfer, which will be one of the world’s major gold-producing concentrators, is supported by Outokumpu’s Australian engineering staff in Perth and Sydney. With offices in 40 countries worldwide, Outokumpu Technology’s Australian offices are able to draw on extensive global resources for input as required.

In a relationship spanning eight years and three projects, Outokumpu has provided Newcrest Mining with a total of 12 thickeners, 103 flotation cells and two on-stream analysis systems - all designed specifically for copper-gold ore bodies.

"The strength of the relationship reflects both the quality and efficiency of the Outokumpu technology and the depth of expertise available to support it", said Mr Garraway.

Telfer will treat 17-19 million tonnes of rock a year to recover 770,000 ounces of gold and about 27,000 tonnes of copper.
