:: Kumba Extends Sishen's Life with new Technology

Kumba Resources has reported a technological breakthrough that enables the Sishen iron-ore mine to upgrade ore previously regarded as unmarketable. Kumba's general manager for iron ore Matie von Wielligh said that the technology would enable the mine to expand production by 10 Mt/y without shortening the life of the operation. Sishen currently produces 27 Mt of iron ore a year, and has an expected life of another 24 years. The company did not give any details of the new technology, which produces an intermediate-grade product with an iron content of 64%. Kumba expects to complete feasibility studies on the process by August.
