Magnesium Technology 2001 : Proceedings of the Symposium
Review: From Fathi Habashi, Laval University, Quebec City, Canada. Fathi.Habashi@gmn.ulaval.ca This book was dedicated to the memory of Lloyd M. Pidgeon (1903-1999) from the University of Toronto in Canada who was instrumental in developing the thermal route for the production of magnesium. It comprises 44 papers and 6 abstracts presented at a symposium held during the TMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, February 11-15, 2001. The book is introduced by Ruth Pidgeon Bryson, daughter of Lloyd Pidgeon, followed by a historical sketch about Pidgeon and the magnesium industry. Of interest to extractive metallurgists are 15 papers covering the technology of extraction of magnesium and its casting. The balance of the book is devoted to magnesium alloys and its physical metallurgy and corrosion. It is a pity that a review paper on magnesium technology by R.E. Brown was published in EPD Congress 2001 although it could have fitted very well here in this symposium. The book represents a new trend in magnesium literature, since, previously the few papers on magnesium were always part of Light Metals annual volumes published by TMS. This shows how fast magnesium research is now advancing. In addition to this conference, the International Magnesium Association in McLean, Virginia will hold a magnesium conference in May 20-22, 2001 in Brussels, Belgium. Last year, there was another magnesium conference in Israel. It is hoped that with these great efforts, magnesium will take the position it deserves among light metals as a material of construction.
