:: Good Results Using Activox at Botswana Nickel Mine
International copper and nickel producer LionOre Mining last week reported on the production of its operations, ahead of the scheduled release of its fourth quarter results in early March.
LionOre also announced its decision to take the Activox Plant at Tati Nickel in Botswana to Phase 1, based upon the success of the plant's performance in 2004.
The plant, which is the world's first fully integrated Activox hydrometallurgical plant, achieved nickel extractions of up to 98% against a target of 96%, while copper extractions were considerably above target, achieving up to 90%. Product quality of metallic cathode for both nickel and copper consistently graded above 99,9% and 99,99% respectively.
The demonstration phase also reportedly confirmed that the skills required to operate and maintain a hydrometallurgical refinery are available within the region.
Based on the success of the demonstration phase, LionOre said it has decided to make the plant fully operational as a Phase 1 Activox hydrometallurgical plant throughout 2005. The focus will be on stable continuous operations, fine-tuning the metallurgical performance, testing materials of construction and the ongoing training of personnel.
