:: Chinese Deal Near for Titan

Australia's Titan Resources NL this week reported to the Australian Stock Exchange that it is on the brink of concluding the first commercial deal for its BioHeapTM metallurgical process to recover nickel and copper from sulphide ore. The deal is with China's Jinchuan Non-Ferrous Metals Corp. which has annual production of 48,0001 of nickel, 60,0001 of copper and 1,0001 of cobalt. The venture is expected to take the form of a jointly-owned Chinese technology company in which Titan would hold a 75% stake.

The company would construct and operate a trial heap of some 200,0001 of ore in the first phase, which should start late this year. Assuming satisfactory performance, the project would move to 1 Mt/y in 2004, and then boost capacity to 1.8 Mt/y. The BioHeapTM process uses bacteria to make the sulphide ore amenable to acid leaching.
