:: Outokumpu Technology to Supply Precious Metals Technology to Tongling, China

Outokumpu Technology has agreed with Tongling Nonferrous Metals (Group) Inc. for the delivery of Kaldo precious metals technology to one of Tongling's copper smelters in Tongling City, Anhui Province, China. Tongling is one of China's biggest copper producers.

A precious metals plant producing Doré metal in connection with copper smelters is normally an investment of EUR 10-15 million. According to the technology transfer contract, Outokumpu Technology's scope covers engineering and proprietary equipment for the new precious metals plant. The raw material is a by-product from the copper electrolysis, i.e. copper anode slime containing gold, silver and selenium. The plant will have an annual capacity of 4,000 tonnes of anode slime and it is scheduled to be in operation by the end of 2008.

"The Kaldo technology for treatment and refining of copper anode slimes is one of the best precious metals processes. High efficiency, low consumption of utilities and environmental friendliness are its most welcome advantages. Many plants in the world use this technology and we believe that we have made the right choice to cooperate with Outokumpu Technology," says Lv Gaoping, General Director of Tongling Precious Metals Plant.

"This project further enhances Outokumpu Technology's position as the market leader in precious metals technology. This will be the second Kaldo installation and largest of its kind in China. About 70% of the world's copper anode slime is being treated and refined with our technology," says Björn Ludvigsson, Vice President of Outokumpu Technology AB in Skellefteå, Sweden.
