:: Kenmare Resources Selects MT Technology for New Expansion

Mozambique’s largest mineral sands producer, Kenmare Resources, is expanding its Moma titanium minerals mine to achieve 50% increase in capacity by 2012.

This will result in a production increase of ilmenite from 800,000 tpa to 1.2 million tpa, zircon from 50,000 tpa to 75,000 tpa and rutile from 14,000 tpa to 21,000 tpa.

Key components of the expansion include:

  • Installation of a second wet concentration plant (WCP) with a spiral feed capacity of 2,000 tph in a separate dredge pond;
  • Addition of a Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) circuit at the front of the ilmenite circuit of the MSP;
  • Addition of an auxiliary 80tph ilmenite circuit existing in the MSP to increase throughput capacity from 135 tph to 225 tph.

Long Term Project Commitment Mineral Technologies has worked closely with Kenmare Resources on the Moma operation for over 10 years. Having initially designed the facilities for BHP’s Beenup project in Western Australia, Mineral Technologies redesigned the plant ahead of its relocation to Mozambique and recommissioning in 2007.

The Moma expansion requires additional process equipment, a substantial amount of which has been selected from Mineral Technologies’ equipment range including:

  • 18 banks of 8 quad start HC1RS (High Capacity) ‘MD’ Spiral Separators
  • 10 ‘Reading’ Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separators
  • 4 ‘Carrara’ Electrostatic Plate Separators
  • 3 ‘Reading’ Induced Roll Magnets
  • 23 Wet and Dry Samplers
  • 1 Table Feeder
  • 47 MSP Spirals

The manufacture of these units is well underway and will be delivered in line with Kenmare Resources plant construction schedule.
