:: Rönnskär Recycles Steel Mill Dust

The Rönnskär smelter is one of the world's largest metal recyclers. Copper, gold and silver are recovered from various types of metal scrap, whereas zinc is mainly recovered from metal ashes. Another very zinc-rich material is steel mill dust, which is recycled at a good profit. At the same time the steelworks gets help to solve an environmental problem.

New legislation does not permit steel mill dust to be deposited any longer. It must be treated in some way and therefore it has become a problem for steelworks worldwide. By recycling the dust Rönnskär is actively supporting the steelworks' environmental efforts. "Our slag fuming plant gives us the unique opportunity to treat such materials. During the past year we have doubled the treatment of steel mill dust. The rise continues in 2002 and the number of suppliers in Sweden increases as well", says Ulf Degerstedt, head of the department.

At Rönnskär the finished zinc product - zinc clinker - contains approximately 20% of zinc that is recovered from steel mill dust. The major part, 80%, comes from metal ashes that are supplied by brass factories.
