SWEMP 2016/CAMI 2016
Istanbul, Turkey, October 5-7 2016


“16th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM on ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES and WASTE MANAGEMENT in ENERGY and MINERAL PRODUCTION (SWEMP2016)” and “6th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on COMPUTER APPLICATIONS in THE MINERALS INDUSTRIES (CAMI2016)” symposiums were taken place in Istanbul, Turkey from October 05-07, 2016. Total of 93 delegates have attended to the symposiums which provided excellent international forum for sharing knowledge and expertise for students, researchers, and industry. Total of 124 scientific papers (68 in SWEMP2016 and 56 in CAMI2016) were published in the symposium proceedings.

The opening ceremony of the symposiums has taken place in Raddisson Blu Conference Hotel, Istanbul on October 5, 9:00 PM. The ceremony led by the insightful speeches by Honorary Chair Prof. Guven ONAL, Mrs. Mohini SINGHAL (on behalf of International Chair Prof. Raj SINGHAL) and Local Chair Prof. Atac BASCETIN on the current status and recent developments on the mining and leading topics of the symposiums.

After the opening speeches, the plenary session for the symposiums has taken place with presentations by Prof. Sukumar BANDOPADHYAY, Prof. Uday KUMAR, Prof. Cuthbert MUSGWINI, Prof. Richard POULIN, Prof. Gurdeep SING and Dr. Erol YILMAZ.

As for the second session of the opening day, keynote presentations were made by Prof. Kadri DAGDELEN from Colorado School of Mines, USA, Prof. Erkan TOPAL from School of Mining and Geosciences, Kazakhstan and Mr. Nejat UTKUCU from Tuprag A.S., Turkey.

Prof. DAGDELEN gave an overview of historical developments on strategic mine planning and optimization that took place during the last 50 years in the area of open pit and underground mining by his presentation entitled “State of Art in Strategic Mine Planning and Optimization in the Mining Industry”.

On the other hand, Prof. TOPAL has presented a new software tool to plan and design mine waste rock dump, which minimizes the mine haulage costs and alleviates the potential environmental harm through the selective placement and encapsulation of reactive waste rock.

As for the final presentation for the keynote session, Mr. UTKUCU has taken stage with his presentation on “Mining Waste Management” in which he gave valuable information about waste management policies and usage of Best Available Technology (BAT).

Geographic Distribution of Attendees

As previously mentioned, 93 delegates from all over the World have participated to the symposiums including but not limited to USA, Canada, Colombia, Greece, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan and South Africa.

Total of 124 scientific papers (68 in SWEMP2016 and 56 in CAMI2016) were published in the symposium proceedings.

Availability of Proceedings and ISBN number of the volume - The proceedings were electronically published and provided to delegates in USB flash drives. ISBN number of the volume is 978-605-66638-1-9. The proceedings are planned to be indexed on Web of Science and the work for indexing is still in process.
