:: Project P705C - Improving Base Metal Electrowinning

Electrowinning (EW) is a critically important process in the production of high purity copper, zinc and nickel. The process is energy and capital intensive, creates acid mist as a by-product which leads to corrosion and personnel issues, and is not well taught in universities leading to training deficiencies for engineers and workers that are new to the industry. Over the past ten years, the AMIRA P705 projects have delivered fundamental information in the form of 80+ reports, measurement prototypes, a current distribution model, numerous training workshops and technology transfer site visits to its sponsors. Even so, more work is needed to:

  • further reduce process energy consumption
  • improve capital utilization
  • reduce acid mist, and
  • develop better training and technology transfer tools.
