:: AUS$2 Million for Greenhouse Ideas

Victorians with bright ideas for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are invited to apply for grants from the Community Action Fund, as part of the state government's $100 million blueprint to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 8.3 million tonnes per year by 2010.

Victorian Minister for Environment John Thwaites said the $2 million Victorian Greenhouse Strategy fund, now in its second year, aims to encourage individual communities to turn their ideas into environmentally sustainable solutions.

"Due to climate change, Victoria can expect a temperature increase of up to five degrees Celsius by the year 2070," Thwaites said. "There's also the possibility of reduced rainfall, more bushfires and more stress on native plants and animals -unless we each do our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Already, the Community Action Fund has supported some excellent ideas to help respond to this challenge."

In the last round of grants, the fund invested nearly $1 million in 24 projects across the state, including a device that turns waste cooking oil into low-emission diesel. "Just as important as the emissions they reduce is the message that each of these projects sends - that we can all do something to help the state of our environment," Thwaites said.

Grant applications for the second round of funding close on December 17, 2003 with successful projects to be announced in early 2004.
