:: Greens Call For Securing of Silvermines Tailings Pond Site

Green Party Enterprise, Trade and Employment spokesperson, Eamon Ryan TD said today that he was extremely disappointed that the Irish Government has failed to reach agreement with Mogul Ireland on the clean up of the Silvermines tailings pond site. He has now called on the Government to carry out the necessary measures to contain and clean up the site as a matter of urgency.

"The announcement that the department of Communications has failed to reach an agreement with Mogul Ireland on the clean up of their Silvermines tailings site, must be a terrible blow to the local community."

"Only last week, when an Oireachteas Committee visited the site, the community was reassured by Government deputies that the matter was finally about to be resolved after 20 years of prevarication."

"If the company does not have the necessary will or resources to clean up the toxic mess they left behind, then the Government should carry out the necessary containment measures and then go looking for their costs in the courts. The current policy of doing nothing, while the toxic residue blows away in dust clouds or leechs into local rivers, shows a shocking disregard to both the local people and the environment."
