:: Virotec Awarded Remediation Contract in Albania

Virotec International Ltd is pleased to announce that its Bauxsol® Technology is part of the successful tender for the remediation of a hazardous arsenic contaminated site located in the Nitrate Fertilizer Plant of Fier, Albania. The tender is an initiative of the Commission of the European Union under its Phare Programme.

The awarding of the contract is the culmination of a significant amount of work by Virotec and Selca S.p.A, our regional strategic partner and follows an extensive review of Bauxsol® Technology.

The work consists of the treatment of approximately 1,000 m3 of hazardous arsenic contaminated solution stored in old tanks and the cleaning of approximately 3,000 m2 of arsenic contaminated soils to a depth of 15 centimetres, on a site where the arsenic solutions leaked and contaminated the soil. The works will be conducted in two stages. The first stage involves detailed analyses of the contaminated liquid and the contaminated soils, including core drilling to depths of up to 3 metres in the defined area to establish accurately the depth and distribution of arsenic contamination. Should the level of contamination exceed the levels provided for in the initial contract, the contract compensation will be increased to cover the costs of the extra Bauxsol® Technology and products that may be required. The second stage of the contract involves completing the remediation work.

Virotec’s Chairman and CEO, Mr Sheeran, stated that "The selection of Bauxsol® Technology for this EU funded project is very gratifying for the Company and we believe it is a very important first step in the wider acceptance of Bauxsol® Technology as a cost effective option to treat many contaminated sites throughout Europe".

The project is expected to be completed within the next 12 months.
