:: Major Gold Producers Commit to Cyanide Code

Six of the world's largest gold producers - AngloGold Ashanti, Barrick, Kinross, Newmont, Placer Dome, and Rio Tinto - have announced their commitment to the International Cyanide Management Code. Three manufacturers of sodium cyanide - Cyanco, CyPlus and DuPont - have also committed to the code. The code, which is a voluntary industrial programme for companies involved in gold production, provides comprehensive guidance for 'best practice' in the use and management of cyanide. It covers nine key areas - production, transportation, handling and storage, operations, decommissioning of facilities, worker safety, emergency response, training, and communications with the public. The code, which was developed by a steering committee of stakeholders under the auspices of the UN Environmental Programme and the International Council on Metals and the Environment (now the International Council on Mining and Metals) is administered by the International Cyanide Management Institute.
