:: An end to Tailings Dams?

Pioneering research on the application of fluid mechanics to mineral waste slurries has shown the potential to reduce, or even eliminate, tailings dams at many mine sites. The work, conducted at the University of Melbourne's Particulate Fluids Processing Centre, enables the behaviour of concentrated slurries to be modelled, and processes and equipment designed to handle them, thus reducing the large volumes of liquid waste that need to be managed. The tailings project will be a major focus of a new joint research initiative, the Australian Mineral Science Research Institute, which is being set up to improve the efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of mining.
