:: Sustainable Development

In the April 2006 issue of Filtration+Separation (pps. 40-42), Ken Sutherland highlights the actions that need to be taken if we are serious about attaining the holy grail of sustainable development: "that development achievable without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, whilst also meeting the needs of the present."

He highlights the fact that there has been little progress to date despite a multitude of 'global summit conferences', which have produced several metres of shelf space occupied by conference proceedings, but little else.

The priorities are the need to reduce net consumption of finite resources (minerals, fossil fuels etc) and to promote more efficient usage of renewable resources, with the need to do this without causing further deterioration in the global environment. Implicit in this is the need for vastly better recycling of the materials that we produce and greatly strengthened environmental protection measures.

He concludes that whilst it is difficult to see any major changes for another decade or so- until energy shortages start to bite- the need for environmental pollution control is evident now, and this will probably be the first place where sustainable development impacts on the separation business.
