:: CSIRO launches one-stop science shop

The CSIRO Centre for Environment and Life Sciences will be a gateway to CSIRO expertise not only in Western Australia but across Australia, says CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Geoff Garrett.

"It will be a huge resource, harnessing the efforts of eight of CSIRO's environment and life sciences Divisions," says Dr Garrett.
"The Centre will consolidate CSIRO resources in WA and will be a focal point where the community, industry, state government and the universities will be able to see what CSIRO has to offer as a strategic ally in tackling important environmental issues in this region. The Centre brings together over 300 researchers and many ongoing research projects to incorporate a wide range of CSIRO know-how".

"CSIRO is aware of the enormous expertise in local agencies and government departments, which network their knowledge so well both interagency and with CSIRO," says Dr Garrett. "There will be increasing emphasis on research groups working with government and industry on large issues facing the region. Managing such relationships is often complex and time consuming, but they are extremely worthwhile, rewarding and the way of the future.

The Centre will occupy 11 hectares over a number of sites. CSIRO Divisions involved in the Centre are: Land and Water, Sustainable Ecosystems, Plant Industry, Livestock Industries, Mathematical and Information Sciences, Forestry and Forest Products, Entomology and Marine Research.

The CSIRO Centre for Environment and Life Sciences was officially opened on Thursday, June 20, 2002.
