:: US Grants $500 000 for South African Plant

The USA has made a grant of more than $0.5 million to finance a study for a power plant fuelled by discarded coal at Richards Bay, Natal, South Africa. The proposed plant would make use of circulating fluidised bed and cogeneration technologies. The study will be carried out by US engineering firm Black & Veatch. The beneficiation process for export-grade coal produces about 55 Mt/y of discard coal, which cannot be used in conventional power stations and which poses a growing environmental risk.
