:: Esquel Bans Cyanide Use

The Argentinian town of Esquel, located near Meridian Gold Inc.'s Esquel gold project, has banned the use and transport of cyanide within its limits. The Esquel project envisages using cyanide for gold recovery. Meridian attributes the move to a "small group of people", who "not subtly" have influenced the local authorities.

According to Meridian, in addition to the cyanide ban, the town council of Esquel has decided to hold a referendum on the project before a public hearing has been held, and to reject the mining law of Argentina. Meridian notes that the plans for the project are designed to meet or exceed all required environmental and safety standards, including using cyanide-destruction techniques.
