:: SPCC Says It Will Clean Up

Southern Peru Copper Corp (SPCC) said in late March it would meet a three-month government deadline to commit to overhauling its aging Ilo smelter to reduce pollution. At that time, the Peruvian Government had given SPCC just three months to prove it was serious in contracting for new environmentally friendly technology or face fines that could lead to the closure of its Ilo smelter. "In May two Australian firms will present us with offers making a total of five offers of which we will select one," SPCC's chairman Oscar Gonzalez told Reuters during a mining conference in Santiago. SPCC is already considering technology offers from Japan's Mitsubishi, Canada's Noranda and Finlandís Outokumpu. SPCC expects to start the project in the second half of this year and maintains it will fully complete the modernisation plan by 2006.

SPCC plans to mitigate environmental impact by capturing at least 92% of the sulphur gases released into the air at its smelter in the port of Ilo, about 900 km south of Lima.
