:: Impala Platinum Achieves ISO 14001 Certification

South African platinum producer Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) has announced that its Impala Platinum Rustenburg operation was granted ISO 14001 certification on June 2.

The Rustenburg operation comprises 13 shaft systems and an opencast operation, mining one-million ounces of platinum a year, and a concentrator and smelter operation, which will process around two-million ounces a year.

The certification follows an audit by the British Standards Institute earlier this year, which recommended that the operations be certified.

The ISO accreditation follows the implementation of an environmental management system (EMS), four years ago, in accordance with the requirements of the certification.

"The implementation and achievement of ISO 14001 is in line with Implats' vision of being a globally competitive resource company.

The platinum group metals we produce are used in numerous applications to reduce harmful emissions and, therefore, our own operations are conducted in an environmentally-friendly way, minimising the impact on the communities surrounding our operations.

"We will continue give of our best to ensure that we retain this certification," said Implats CEO Keith Rumble.
