:: Acid Rock Drainage Handbook Now Online

The ARD Handbook is now publicly available via the AMIRA International website, www.amira.com.au

The handbook standardises and improves a series of procedures for the assessment of acid rock drainage (ARD) liability, and is a major outcome of project P387A, Mine Waste Management: Prediction and Kinetic Control of Acid Mine Drainage facilitated on behalf of industry by AMIRA, the mineral industries research organisation.

ARD is produced by the exposure of sulphide minerals such as pyrite to atmospheric oxygen and water. The ability to identify in advance any mine materials that could potentially produce ARD is essential for timely implementation of mine waste management strategies for ARD control.

Sponsors for this project include Rio Tinto Ltd, Placer Dome Ltd, PT Freeport Indonesia Ltd, Newcrest Mining Ltd and the Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy.

Launching the handbook at the 6th International Conference on Acid Rock Drainage in Cairns in mid-July, AMIRA's Dr Paul Greenhill said: AMIRA, in conjunction with the Ian Wark Research Institute, Environmental Geochemistry International and the sponsors are pleased to make this handbook publicly available for the benefit of industry. We hope it will assist industry in management of potential liability from ARD.

To download a copy of the handbook, go to the AMIRA homepage, www.amira.com.au and select the handbook from the Downloads section.
