This is the proceedings volume of the symposium held within the Conference of Metallurgists in Toronto August 26-29, 2001. Previous symposia were held in 1992, 1995, and 1998 and their proceedings are available from the CIM office in Montreal. The present volume contains 41 papers by authors from 20 countries, grouped under the following headings: metal recycling (7 papers), by-product processing (8), resource recovery from tailings and effluents (6), biotechnology applications (6), life cycle analysis and optimization (3), basic research (3), and environmental aspects (8).

The papers are of a high caliber treating important problems and the book is well produced. It has an author and subject indexes. Just a minor comment: the editors are still using under lined journal titles although Italics could have been more attractive.
