2nd International Conference on Clean Coal Technologies
Sardinia, Italy, 10-12 May 2005

CCT2005, the second international conference on clean coal technologies for our future was held at the Sant’Elmo Beach Hotel Conference Centre on Sardinia.. It was organised by Sotacarbo, Italy, and the IEA Clean Coal Centre in London. More than two hundred delegates (211) from 28 countries plus representatives from the International Energy Agency and the European Commission attended.

Keynotes sessions addressed: Coal policies and energy security; Needs and challenges for sustainable development; and, What does it take to get CCTs deployed.

Technical sessions addressed: International perspectives on CCTs; Advanced technology for clean and efficient coal firing; Achievements in coal gasification technologies; Hydrogen and clean fuels from coal; Carbon capture and storage; Towards Zero Emissions; Co-utilisation of coal, biomass and other fuels; Coal cleaning; and, Flue gas clean-up.

In a closing address, John Topper, Managing Director of the Clean Coal Centre, said that the conference had contributed to the agenda for coal which now extends right into the G8 meetings. The conference would also influence and reinforce messages on the urgency and importance of RD & D for both short term improvements and the long term drive towards carbon free power plants. Finally he praised the conference for its superb networking in a friendly atmosphere promoted by the beautiful location.

Most of the technical papers presented at the conference are published in a CD-ROM produced by the Clean Coal Centre (ISBN 92-9029-414-0; £50 plus VAT).
