WALSIM - Water, Air, Land: Sustainable Issues in Mineral and Metal Extraction
Winnipeg, Canada, 25-27 August 2008

WALSIM was held at the 47th annual Conference of Metallurgists, which is an annual event of the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), in August 25-27 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was sponsored by the Environment Section of The Metallurgical Society and well attended with participation by delegates from approximately 20 countries from north America, Europe and most significantly Japan, the Japanese researchers contributing about 10 of the 42 papers. There were also several papers from China in the program, but none of the authors showed up for their presentation!

The subject of the Symposium was environmental, connected with mining, mineral and metallurgical industries. It was continuation of a series of symposia on Waste Processing and Recycling in Mineral and Metallurgical Industries conducted once every 3 years by the Metallurgical Society of CIM between 1992 and 2004. The papers were grouped under various topical titles, Resource Recovery from Metallurgical Waste Materials, By-Products Processing (Slag, Fly Ash, EAF Dust), Gaseous Pollutants Treatment, Wastewater and Effluent Treatment, Metal Recycling, and Sustainability and Basic Research.

The papers were peer reviewed by four editors and have been published in a DVD, which includes 7 interactive books, each covering a specific symposium held at the Conference. The papers in WALSIM were edited by C. Q. Jia (University of Toronto), C. A. Pickles, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario), S. Brienne (Teck Cominco Metals, Trail, British Columbia) and S. R. Rao (McGill University, Montreal). The DVD is titled COM2008 Winnipeg Proceedings and available at Canadian $120 per copy from Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, 855 - 3400 de Maisonneuve Boulevard West, Montreal, QC, Canada H3Z 3B8.

Report by S. R. Rao, Department of Mining and Materials Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Canada
