The high-quality technical program at Tailings 2014 surpasses participants’ expectations
The quality of the papers presented was what stood out to over 160 professionals who attended the 49 technical talks at the 2nd International Seminar on Tailings Management, Tailings 2014, which took place from August 20-22 in Antofagasta, Chile.
Sergio Barrera, Tailings 2014 Technical Coordinator stated: “From a technical point of view the seminar was a success. I received a lot of positive comments on the quality of the presentations and the overall organization. These aspects met everyone’s expectations, and in my opinion, even surpassed them. Several participants felt that this event went above and beyond what other international conferences in the industry do."
Amongst the conclusions that were drawn from the event, the expert highlighted the growing acceptance and understanding that the operational phase is one of the most critical in terms of ensuring the stability of tailings deposits and as such, monitoring and control play a key role.
One of the main issues discussed at the seminar was the implementation of new technologies to improve water recovery and the stability of tailings deposits. Following three technical talks on the matter it was agreed that “water in tailings is the main destabilizing agent and there is therefore a tendency to apply technologies that increase water concentration in the discharge," Barrera added.
Amongst the presentations that best highlighted the issue were those from Minera Centinela, on their Esperanza deposit, and the management and analysis of opportunities to reduce water loss as a result of resaturation at Minera Escondida.
Next year’s event, to be held in Santiago, Chile, expects to gather another group of world-class professionals and academics. Tailings operations will be one of the key themes in the 2015 version of the seminar.
