:: Kumba Research and Development wins National Science and Technology Forum Award

The research and development team at diversified metals and mining company Kumba Resources Limited (Kumba) has jointly won the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) award for a corporate organisation.

The annual award was presented recently in Johannesburg by the Minister of Science and Technology, Minister Mosibudi Mangena, "in recognition of an outstanding contribution to science, engineering and technology”.

The NSTF is regarded as the most representative body of science, engineering and technology stakeholders in South Africa.

Kumba Research and Development (R&D) won the award jointly with the Kirstenbosch Research Centre in category D: Corporate Organisations. This award is made to a South African corporate organisation or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to science, engineering and technology over the past 10 years.

Kumba R&D represents one of the leading centres of excellence for research and technology in the South African mining and minerals industry and has achieved innovative solutions across Kumba’s operations in commodities including iron ore, coal, mineral sands and base metals.

Examples of these solutions are improvements in iron ore beneficiation, processes for low-grade iron ore, and adaptation of selected technology for the production of ferrosilicon powder to improve dense medium separation of iron ores. In coal, processes to re-treat discard material economically have been developed, and in base metals, Kumba R&D supports ongoing process improvements at the Zincor zinc smelter and at the Rosh Pinah zinc and lead mine. Kumba R&D was instrumental in forming the Kumba heavy minerals business through the development of unique mineral processing routes for high slimes content material as well as the development of in-house ilmenite smelter capabilities.

"Technology is a key strategic resource for Kumba and our R&D team continues to successfully develop and apply technology that is geared to improve our operational performance and business success. This affords us a sustainable competitive advantage," said Charles Meintjes, Kumba’s executive director for corporate services.

"We are proud to have won this prestige award which acknowledges the role that Kumba R&D is playing both within the group, and more broadly, in the South African mining and minerals industry," he added.
