:: Australia's New Ore Research Capability

The Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES) at the University of Tasmania is one of 11 new Centres of Excellence out of almost 100 applications, funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council (ARC) in June 2005.

The Centre is the only one associated with the mining industry and the only one fully funded - $30 million will be provided to the Centre over five years with half coming from the ARC and half from the Australian and global minerals industry and participating Universities. The minerals industry has guaranteed $1.8 million a year towards the Centre's research programs, with over half funded through AMIRA International as the industry's research association.

The Centres are the government's key mechanism to enhance the scale and focus of research that can contribute to Australia's National Research Priorities.

Professor Ross Large, Director of the Centre of Excellence, said the grant was a major coup for the minerals industry.

He said that the chief reasons for success were the Centre's world-class research team at the University of Tasmania and its partners, and the very strong support from the Australian and international minerals industry for the research program.

"We will be linking our research in the new Centre to several other internationally-recognised research groups," explained Professor Large, "including the Colorado School of Mines, the University of British Columbia and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre at the University of Queensland, plus targeted researchers from ANU, the University of Melbourne, CSIRO, Johns Hopkins University and others."
