:: South American Expansion for Sinclair Knight Merz

Leading project delivery organisation, Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) has bolstered its presence in South America after announcing a merger with one of Chile’s largest engineering companies.

Minmetal provides integrated solutions to clients in the Mining & Metals, Infrastructure and Industrial markets. With a workforce of more than 400 engineers, project managers, technicians and support staff, the company takes on full engineering services and process design, as well as project management, procurement and operational responsibilities for its clients.

SKM and Minmetal will merge their respective businesses in Chile, where they have both been servicing organisations such as BHP Billiton, SQM, Anglo American and Codelco (Chilean Copper Corporation) for a number of years.

By using the project experience and process skills of Minmetal, the Santiago office of SKM Minmetal will be able to strengthen SKM’s ability to service the copper and base metals industry on a global basis.

SKM's team has extensive experience in delivering projects for most commodities, with particular expertise in working for clients in the copper, iron ore, coal, mineral sands and base metals sectors.

This hard-earned reputation as a leading service provider to the Resources sector has been gained after the company's successful completion of studies and the EPCM (engineering, procurement and construction management) of major projects for global mining industry clients. These include BHP Billiton’s Area C Mine and Associated Port Development (with Fluor), and Rio Tinto’s Dampier Port Upgrade in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, along with coal developments in Central Queensland and the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.

Sinclair Knight Merz Chief Executive, Paul Dougas, said Minmetal is one of the premier service providers to the Resources sector in South America. "For more than 30 years, Minmetal has successfully faced all challenges in different economic cycles, building and diversifying its services to provide integrated solutions to clients across South and Central America," he said.

"Bringing our two companies together will enable us to better service the needs of our clients in the booming global Resources market," he added.

Sinclair Knight Merz employs more than 4,500 staff in offices across Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, the Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and South America.

Since 1964 it has been servicing clients in the Resources, Infrastructure, Power & Industry, Water & Environmental, and Buildings & Property markets.
