:: Codelco and Outokumpu Sign Technology Agreement

The state-owned Chilean copper producer Corporacion del Cobre de Chile (Codeico) and the Finnish metals and technology group Outokumpu Oyj have formed a strategic alliance to co-operate in the development and use of technology. The 'framework agreement on co-operation and development' covers "technology intensive projects to be executed by Codeico in Chile ... joint participation in projects related to mineral processing, smelting and refining in Chile or in third countries ... and in technology development projects". Third countries specifically mentioned as possible locations for the proeessing/smelting/refining projects are China and Russia.

A key element in the rationale cited by the two companies is the complementary nature of their respective competencies in the metals business, from exploration through mining and processing to down-stream manufacturing. They expect "important gains and synergies through sharing common targets".
