:: The Minerals Processing Industry Finds the Brains Fund Resourceful

Director of the world-class Ian Wark Research Institute at UniSA Professor John Ralston says that the very best skilling of the Australian population is imperative for the future of the minerals processing industry.

Ralston delivered this key message at an Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Adelaide on 2 July 2009.

The Ian Wark Research Institute's 160 staff and students come from all over the world, working on more than 100 active projects for companies like Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton.

Ralston says that with industry sponsorship and support, the institute has helped resolve issues, improve processes and even produce revolutionary outcomes.

For instance, the Wark's researchers have developed a minerals processing technique called microfluidics. It uses microscopic streams of liquid to separate minerals and precious metals from dissolved rock.
