:: Science and Technology Strategy Finalised  

South Africa's Department of Science and Technology has called on government to double its investment in science and technology over the next three years. The current science vote is about R1.5 billion, and R&D spending by the public and private sectors combined is 0.7% of the gross domestic product, compared with 1.1% in 1990. The department has finalised a new national R&D strategy, which involves establishing and funding five new 'technology missions' to address this shortfall. These include biotechnology, information and communications technology, advanced manufacturing technology to exploit the country's natural resources (such as mining), and technology for reducing poverty. Funding for innnovation in these areas will apply to both public and private sector initiatives.
