:: World Class Minerals Institute Launches in WA

Western Australia's powerhouse resources sector enjoys international recognition and the launch of a world class Minerals Institute has added another dimension to the industry.

The Minerals Institute is a joint venture by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy and the Department of Industry and Resources with active involvement from WA universities and the minerals industry. Launched by the Western Australian Minister for State Development Clive Brown the Minerals Institute will provide long term initiatives and strategies to ensure a sustainable skilled workforce for the future of the resources sector.

Minerals Institute chairman Peter Lalor said there is a world wide shortage of skilled people and Western Australia was an obvious location for a minerals eduction centre of excellence. "The Minerals Institute will provide an environment for collaboration and change within the university and VET arena to ensure the ongoing success and viability of minerals education within Western Australia" he said.

Lalor said there was a national and international trend towards creating education centres of excellence to attract people to an industry that offers exciting and diverse career opportunities. "It is critical that the objectives of the Minerals Institute link the Western Australian minerals industry to a wider national and potentially global strategy". An ancillary role of the Minerals Institute will be to provide awareness of Minerals research and development. The Institute will provide the pivotal link between education and industry R&D initiatives.

Lalor concluded by saying he is enthusiastic about the activities planned for the Minerals Institute and looks forward to working with industry, the state and Federal Governments, universities and VET providers.
