:: Industry Reps to Get First Look At Technical Skills on Show at JKMRC Conference

The JKMRC International Student Conference is gearing up to be one of the mineral sectors most important events of 2004 with postgraduate researchers traveling from across the globe to Brisbane, Australia, in early September.

Conference Chairman Mike Daniel said this year's conference had attracted a record number of sponsors, many of whom see the event as an opportunity to assess the levels of postgraduate knowledge and skills within the minerals industry from around the globe. He added that with 22 sponsors coming on board for the conference, a strong message was being collectively sent that the minerals industry is supporting postgraduate research.

"Postgraduate students value industry participation at this level, and in turn seek from mining companies some form of interaction which could see them settling into possible long-term service to the minerals industry,"Mr Daniel said. "We want to create an intimate one-on-one style of experience so that postgraduate researchers attending the event, either as presenters or delegates, could exchange their ideas with as many senior minerals industry representatives at the conference as possible."

Presenters at the conference will soon arrive in Brisbane from several universities and associated institutions. At this stage seven countries will be represented at the JKMRC International Student Conference, including Australia, Canada, Finland, Indonesia, South Africa, United Kingdom, and Turkey.

Topics being covered include mineral processing operations and new equipment, mineral flotation, image analysis, physical modelling in cave mining, underground mine ventilation, microwave technology in mining, mine waste management, and intelligent clothing for health monitoring.

The JKMRC International Student Conference will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 6-7 September 2004. Selected conference papers will be published in Minerals Engineering Journal and the AusIMM Bulletin.
