Book Description:
This book explores the impact of mining on the subsistence strategies of rural people in the mineral states of West Africa, both Anglophone and Francophone, especially focusing on the mine workers.

In addition to specific studies of the mining industry, contributors also explore the wider socio-economic aspects including gender dimensions, environmental issues, legal and tenure regulations, relations with large-scale mining operations, and human rights and conflict issues including the role of so-called "blood diamonds" in the war-torn states of Sierra Leone.

Of interest to all readers with an interest in extractive industries, rural enterprise, migration, and West Africa.

Gavin M. Hilson is a Lecturer in Environment and Development at the School of Environment and Development, University of Manchester, and an adjunct research associate at the ESRC Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society, Cardiff University. He received his Ph.D. from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine
