Fluorspar ’03: Opportunities & Optimism (F03)
Rome, Italy, November 9-11 2003

Industrial Minerals magazine (IM), the leading publication for the non-metallic minerals industry worldwide, held its Fluorspar ’03 Conference at the Hilton Cavalieri, Rome, Italy from 9-11 November 2003.

IM’s Fluorspar Conference is an annual event that brings together key players from the global fluorspar and derivatives industry, including producers, processors, traders, consumers, consultants and industry associations. Over 120 delegates from 26 countries gathered in one of Rome’s top hotels to enjoy two days of presentations on up-to-the-minute issues affecting their industry, plus networking opportunities at the cocktail reception on Sunday night.

Many delegates left behind autumnal rain at home to experience unseasonably warm and sunny weather in one of Europe’s most fascinating cities. The conference lunches were held in the hotel’s spectacular roof terrace restaurant, where the Hilton’s hilltop location afforded spectacular views of the ancient city and its famous landmarks.

The conference subtitle was “Opportunities & optimism”, and although the market has experienced some tightness this year, there are still plenty of opportunities in the growth of new applications, and the emergence of new production operations on both the raw materials and consuming sides.

Barely a month went by in 2003 without big fluorspar developments hitting the pages of IM. The news has been dominated by developments in pricing, Chinese exports, new production and consumption ventures, and changing regulations for downstream products. The conference gave delegates the chance to discuss and assimilate these issues and formulate strategies for going forward.

The 14 top industry speakers were selected to give their opinions and insight on the burning issues affecting today’s industry. Sessions focused on the Chinese market, regulatory issues, regional developments, processing and logistics, new sources of supply, and market forecasts for fluorspar and fluorocarbons.

Next year, IM will take its Fluorspar Conference to San Luis Potosi, Mexico, from 31 October 2 November, when delegates will have the opportunity to visit one of the world’s leading fluorspar operations, Cía Minera Las Cuevas SA de CV, by participating in the conference field trip.
