The XIX International Conference on Extractive Metallurgy was held at La Quinta Dorada Hotel in Saltillo, Coahuila. It is an annual event that started by the faculty members of the University of Sonora in Hermosillo in 1991. This conference honored Dr. Maria Teresa Certucha Barragán who was one of the organizers of the first conference. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee was Dr. Martin Pech-Canul a material scientist at Mexico’s Center for Research and Advanced Studies unit in Saltillo known by the Spanish acronym CINVESTAV. The Center was founded in 1961 to promote scientific and technical research in Mexico and has a number of laboratories thought the country.

The conference unites Mexican metallurgists and material scientists every year with some invited foreign academics and industrialists. It usually attracts about 120 participants with an equal number of presentations and posters. Papers are presented in Spanish and English. A committee evaluates the posters and gives a prize to the best one at the conference banquet. A short course on pyrometallurgy was given by Professor Fathi Habashi from Canada one day before the opening of the conference. The course attracted 25 participants from Mexican industry and universities. A Book of Abstracts and a CD containing the papers was made available to participants. The conference was very well organized and the nice weather of Saltillo contributed to the smooth running of events.
