:: Largest Order to Date for Bateman Density Tracers

Debswana has placed an order for a R486,000 (USD70,000) consignment of Bateman Density Tracers. This is the largest single order for tracers yet received by Bateman Engineering.

The order is for 3,000 cubic shaped tracers in each of 10 different specific gravities, increasing from 2.7 to 3.53. As both 4 mm and 8 mm of each specific gravity are required, the order is thus for a total of 60,000 individual tracer particles.

To maintain strict quality control over the size and shape of the tracers, the manufacture of the tracers is a very labour-intensive task. As a result it has been necessary to arrange to deliver the tracers in three separate batches.

Density tracers are an essential aid to determine the processing efficiency of DMS (dense-media separation) cyclones and other beneficiation plants that exploit the density differentials between the valuable product and the host material. They simulate the density characteristics and particle dimensions of precious stones such as diamonds, emeralds and sapphires or other components of ores containing valuable products like platinum and base metals, chromite, andalusite and even coal.

Small amounts of the tracers are introduced into the processing circuit and a comparison of the amount recovered with the amount introduced provides a reliable measure of the recovery efficiency of the plant. The recovery of the tracers from the host material is facilitated by their relatively vivid colours, which are coded according to specific gravity.
