Twenty papers from a conference for which no date nor location is revealed synthesize the current state of an area of the copper industry, and the lessons learned over the three decades since the first commercial operation began. They consider such aspects as economic considerations, environmental compliance, design strategies for heap leach in extreme environments, the evolution of cathode quality at Phelps Dodge Mining Company, and the design and operation of a solvent extraction plant. The volume contains 21 papers covering all aspects of heap leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning of copper plus one paper devoted to pressure leaching of copper concentrates. Two of the papers include historical information about Cyprus Miami Mining Corporation and Phelps Dodge’s Morenci operations. Well known authors have contributed to this work which can be considered both as an introduction to copper hydrometallurgy for students particularly heap leaching and as useful information book for professionals. It also contains a 46 pages report on electrolytic copper electrowinning and solvent extractions operating data world wide.
The book is pleasantly presented, clear photos and diagrams, well edited, and readable from cover to cover. It also includes an index which helps greatly locating information. The editor is a Senior Associate with SRK Consultants in Denver, Colorado.
