MEI Online: Hydrometallurgy: Conference Reports: ALTA 2002

ALTA 2002

Perth, Australia,
May 19-24, 2002

The back to back ALTA 2002 Nickel/Cobalt and Copper conferences were held in Perth Western Australia on May 19th-24th. The events were very well attended, with 220 delegates from 23 countries. A total of 43 papers were presented, with a significant number of international speakers.

Key topics at the Nickel/Cobalt Conference included developing PAL projects for laterites, the possibility of utilising atmospheric pressure leaching, new developments in the application of SX and IX for the separation and recovery of nickel and cobalt, the Titan/Pacific Ore BioHeap leaching process, hydrometallurgical processes for sulphide concentrate treatment processes, materials of construction, nickel electrowinning practice and other aspects of nickel/cobalt technology. A post conference visit was made to the BioHeap pilot operation at Radio Hill, near Karratha in Western Australia. The conference Key Note address was presented by Bill Ryan, Managing Director of Titan Resources.

The Copper Conference had a strong emphasis on the heap leaching of secondary sulphide ores, and included three papers from major Chilean operations. Modelling and scale-up methods for heap leaching were also featured. Another major focus was the hydrometallurgical treatment of sulphide ores and concentrates by bio-leaching, pressure oxidation and halide leaching. Papers on many of the processes currently under development were included, along with several on the successful Mt Gordon chalcocite ferric leaching plant in Queensland. Other topics included SX developments, materials of construction and methods of dealing with acid rock drainage.
