International Ion Exchange Conference, IEX 2004
July 4-7, 2004
Cambridge, UK

This latest event in the regular series of SCI ion exchange conferences held every four years at Churchill College Cambridge since 1984 attracted over 120 delegates from 23 countries. An important feature of these meetings is that they attract an almost unique mix of delegates from academia, suppliers of ion exchange materials and plants, manufacturing industry and manufacturers of associated systems such as instruments. This particular meeting commemorated the 50th anniversary of the first SCI ion exchange meeting in 1954. During the meeting papers were presented on a wide-range of topics concerned with the science and technology of ion exchange ranging from the fundamentals, modelling and novel developments of the ion exchange process to the preparation of high purity water for steam generation and potable water; treatment of effluents and waste waters; and applications in the fields of biotechnology, catalysis, food, hydrometallurgy and pharmaceuticals. Overall 48 oral presentations were given that were supported by a number of poster papers. The proceedings, consisting of all the oral presentations, have been published and copies are available from the Publications Department of the Society of Chemical Industry.

The meeting also provided the opportunity present the SCI Ion Exchange Award to three distinguished ion exchange scientists: Michael Sadler, U.K. consultant in the area of high purity water; Professor Arup SenGupta, Lehigh University, USA for his work on environmental applications; and Professor Wolfgang Höll, Karlsruhr Research Centre, Germany for studies largely on the purification of potable waters.
