Fourth International Conference on Hydrometallurgy
October 17-19, 2004
Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China

The conference was organized by Prof. Lan Xinzhe and his group from Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology in Xi’an and held at the Academic Exchange Center Nan Yang Hotel at One Xing Qing South Road which belongs to the University. Attendance was 113 which included a large delegation from Australia. Unfortunately because of communication problem with electronic mail and fax, no participants came from Europe or Africa and only the present writer from North America. The conference was supposed to be held last year, but because of the SARS epidemic outbreaks in China, it was postponed. The conference is the fourth in a series of conferences held in China dating back from 1988 when the first conference was held in Beijing at the Friendship Hotel, fallowed by the second in 1992 also in Beijing then the third in 2001 in Kunming. The fifth is expected to be held in 2008. A book of abstracts containing140 abstracts was distributed to the participants.

The first day of the conference included the opening ceremony with speeches from University administration as well as Xi’an officials then followed by plenary lectures. In the second day two parallel sessions were held. The closing ceremony was held at the auditorium of the University. The third days was devoted to site seeing in the outskirts of Xi’an. One group went to see the Famen Buddhist Temple and the other group went to see the hot springs and the Qin Dynasty Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses Museum.

The warm welcome and the wonderful hospitality of the Chinese host is remarkable and worth noting. Beside the technical information gained one should not overlook the importance of such conferences where old friends meet and one makes new friends. This is the best way to diffuse information.

The Organizing Committee distributed an Address Book of Participants and made a memorable photograph of the delegates. At the extreme right on the first row sitting is Prof. Lan Xinzhe, chairman, who is to be congratulated for his excellent effort.
