Metallurgical Superintendent [Jan.26, 2010]
Location: Tanzania

Barrick Africa is the largest gold mining company in Tanzania with four operating gold mines, Bulyanhulu, North Mara, Tulawaka and Buzwagi. Barrick Africa also includes joint venture partnerships in the Kabanga Nickel Project in Tanzania.
Buzwagi Mine in Tanzania is currently searching for an experienced Metallurgical Superintendent. The position reports to the Process Manager, working on a 9/4 weeks roster.
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to ensure that employees and contractors adhere to safety and environmental standards that exceed worldwide industry practice and any applicable legislative requirements.
- Lead the Buzwagi Metallurgy Team Development & Operation to ensure agreed targets are achieved, within corporate safety and environmental guidelines in the areas of:
- Financial: Capital Cost, Profits, Cash Flow and Balance Sheet Review;
- Mill Availability, Throughput and Recovery; and
- Process Operating & Maintenance Costs and Capital Expenditure.
- Lead activities of the Metallurgy Team to assure cost effective and high quality metal recovery activities and to optimize Company’s financial status and net smelter return. Achieving optimum metallurgical efficiency is considered a Key Performance Indicator.
- Develop Metallurgical Reconciliation procedures to comply with Sarbanes Oxley Act. Collaborate with Mine and Geology Departments to develop overall mine to mill Reconciliation. Authorize monthly Metallurgical Reconciliation figures during Operation.
- Develop and maintain reporting procedures for production, metal recovery and operating cost by preparing reports for the Process Department as required. Implement reporting functions for metal recovery, cost and commitment forecasts for Life of Mine.
- Manage Succession Planning within the Metallurgy Team to ensure that PML achieves development of Tanzanian employees to assume positions of increasing accountability. Development of Graduate Metallurgists into positions of increasing accountability is a Key Performance Indicator. Additionally, ensure Metallurgy Team contributes to the development of Plant Operators.
- Provide technical input into development of training packages.
- Provide ongoing training, mentoring and employee performance management, to develop and maintain a safe, competent and results orientated Metallurgical team, and to ensure that employees gain new skills and achieve their full potential.
- Co-ordinate concentrate and doré sales contracts.
- Responsible for coordinating Site Laboratory Contractor (SGS).
- In conjunction with the Security Manager and Process Manager, assist with all aspects of Process Plant security to prevent and eliminate theft and fraud.
- Assure alignment between Metallurgy Team activities and other Departments at Buzwagi.
- Actively collaborate with the Buzwagi senior management team to ensure that targets for resource exploitation, budget KPI’s, capital management, cost control, safety performance, employee development, environmental management and corporate governance are achieved.
- Continually review every aspect of the Process Plant to ensure that opportunities to add value and enhance shareholder wealth are identified and implemented. Ensure the Metallurgy Team initiates and leads continuous improvement projects.
- Evaluate projects to determine appropriate capital expenditure proposals and/or process modifications.
- Facilitate creation of a workplace climate that ensures minimum disruption to work due to industrial relations issues.
- Actively participate in appropriate industry committees, government working parties and community groups to ensure that Buzwagi interests are represented and protected.
- Relieve in the position of Process Manager when required during the Process Manager’s absence. This position is considered as 2-IC to the Process Manager position.
Qualifications & Experience:
Qualification:
B. Chemical, Mineral Processing or Metallurgical Engineering, BSc. Metallurgy or similar
Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years progressive experience in a variety of process operations including development and expansion. Experience with gravity recovery, base metals flotation, CIL, gold reconciliation, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role, is essential.
- Demonstrated skills with capital justification, budget development, expenditure and controls.
- Experience with operations and project development in a developing country environment.
- Awareness of culture, business environment and infrastructures issues.
- Experience in systematic coaching and training of employees in developing country.
- Previous commissioning experience is advantageous.
