R&D Co-ordinator: Minerals Hydrometallurgy  [Feb.18, 2010]

Location: South Africa

Mintek provides extractive-metallurgical services to exploration companies and minerals-based operations, and employs teams of specialists in hydrometallurgy, bio-hydrometallurgy and process engineering to match ores and concentrates to suitable processes for the exploitation of the contained mineral or metal values.

We need to appoint a professional researcher as R&D Co-ordinator at middle-management level to lead the planning and establishment of new research avenues, and the administration of research funding applications and the resultant intellectual property. The candidate should have an established research track record and reputation in a field related to either the Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology or the Geo-Sciences. New research avenues include remediation of the impacts of mining and metallurgical operations, biological synthesis of compounds for minerals processing, and the geomechanics and geochemistry of low grade ores.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Assist the manager in the acquisition and allocation of funding towards the research of postgraduate students and professional researchers;
  • Lead the associated interactions with research funding agencies, appropriate forums, academic institutions, commercial clients and consortium partners, at an expert technical level;
  • Contribute towards the formulation and implementation of strategies for the recruitment of research staff and the acquisition, maintenance and enhancement of research equipment and infrastructure;
  • Administer and advise on the optimal deployment of bursars, trainees and interns;
  • Contribute to ascertaining needs and trends in the minerals industry, contribute to the development of existing research, and conceptualise new research projects;
  • Administer the Intellectual Property rights and obligations associated with research outputs to ensure compliance with the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for the Publicly Funded Research Act;
  • Incorporate the necessary Quality, Environmental and Safety aspects into the planning and execution of projects, in line with Mintek policies and procedures; and,
  • Personal circumstances must permit travelling locally and abroad.

JOB KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Preferably a Ph.D, at least an M.Sc, in the Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology or Geo-Sciences;
  • At least 10 years research experience since first graduation;
  • The successful candidate needs to have excellent communication skills; and,
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the sourcing and administration of research funding, and the supervision and mentoring of research students.

Salary: R700 000 CTC negotiable.
